Original Carl J. Horner cabinet photographs can be found in Cooperstown, The McGreevey Collection of Baseball Images at Boston Public Library, and in a few of the world's very finest collections. Surviving Horner photographs are indeed rare, to say the least, and they are among the most cherished items in the entire hobby. Horner was of course the very first photographer to use professional techniques such as proper lighting and high-quality development in the infancy of baseball photography, and his role as the primary photographer for the portraits used in the famed T206 set is one of his crowning achievements. Unfortunately, we'll never know precisely how many of the set's images hail from the handiwork of Horner, but, in addition to the famed Wagner image as well as a handful of others that have been cataloged, we can be sure that the offered example of Red Dooin can be counted among them. Measuring 5-1/4 x 7-1/4" and displaying in strong EX/MT to perhaps even NM condition, this Horner cabinet hails from the 1996 Baseball Magazine Archives sale conducted by Christies and features a superbly focused and perfectly preserved 4 x 5-1/2" black and white photograph affixed to an original Horner mount from his final days with Jordan Photographic on Boylston Street in Boston (1906-1910). One of the appealing traits of the offered piece is that it displays a prominent stamp on the obverse that reads "Removed to 250 Huntington Ave." which would become the home to Horner Studios until well after his death in 1926. In addition to the Baseball Magazine/Christies hologram, the reverse also features some pencil notations from at least two different hands, one of which may very well be Horner's. Please see our website for an image of the T206 card produced from this very photograph, and keep in mind the magnitude and utter scarcity of a T206-related, original, Horner cabinet when considering your bid. Worthy of the Hall of Fame, this acquisition will immediately elevate your collection to the ranks of the world's finest!
