The first official college football game was played in 1869 by Rutgers and Princeton but it wasn't until the 1880s that Yale's Walter Camp pioneered rules changes that transformed a game resembling rugby into what we now know as American football. Camp would become Yale's first head coach, selecting Ed Beecher as the team's captain. Beecher's inclusion in the 1888 Goodwin Champions collection makes him the subject of the first-ever football card produced. Offered is a piece of gridiron history, a copy of that very first football card, graded GOOD 2 by SGC. Though a bit shifted toward the lower left with rounded endpoints and wear around the perimeter, the card shows no major liabilities and has extremely pleasing eye appeal given the modest grade. A wonderful ad historic addition to any vintage collection.
