It's still kind of a wonder as to why Goudey went from four Babe Ruth cards in their 1933 set to none in the 1934 edition (some say that his relationship with teammate Lou Gehrig had gone cold and Ruth didn't want to be associated with a collection that has "Lou Gehrig says..." on most of the cards), but it was becoming increasingly clear that "The Iron Horse" was the new face of the Yankees dynasty. The year was also significant as Gehrig was in the midst of his 2,130 consecutive game streak (lasting from 1925-1939) and about to win the AL Triple Crown with a .363 batting average, 49 homers, and 165 RBI. The featured card has been graded NM 7 by SGC and possesses many characteristics of a NM/MT specimen, tempered only by the slight centering shift toward the northeast. The registration and color of the central image are clean and sharp, the corners are NM to NM/MT overall, and the reverse is clean with a slight tinge of toning. A wonderful specimen of one of the key cards to the 1934 Goudey series.
