The spring of 1949 rolled around and the Bowman Gum produced their second baseball card series, a vast departure from their inaugural series the previous year. While the 48-card black and white first series was loaded with key "rookie" cards, the decision to expand the set to 240 cards made it one of the best collections ever assembled for rookie cards, sporting debut pasteboards of Paige, Hodges, Snider, Ashburn, Wynn, Kell, Roberts, Campanella, Lemon, and Jackie Robinson. Bold, attention-commanding colors dominated the card fronts with color enhanced photographs of the legendary ballplayers pictured on each of the pasteboards. Offered here is a very strong near-complete set, mostly PSA and SGC graded, that is led by an SGC 84 NM 7 #224 Paige, a SGC 60 EX 5 #226 Snider, and a PSA 5 #50 J. Robinson.
