Though the 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card is leading an unprecedented resurgence in the sports card market, running stride for stride with MJ is another pasteboard icon; the 1979 O-Pee-Chee rookie card of "The Great One" Wayne Gretzky. It's one of the most coveted sports cards produced over the last 50 years and an essential part of any advanced collection, though results from recent sales make it necessary for most collectors to get it soon or give up. His body of work as a 18-year old rookie in the WHA was impressive; 46 goals and 110 points in just 60 games, which led to comparisons to the great Guy Lafleur. But Gretzky quickly made those comparisons obsolete, leading the NHL in goals five times and assists 16 times, including 13 consecutive seasons from 1979-92. With the possible exception of the immortal Babe Ruth, there has never been an athlete that has so conquered their sport that Wayne Gretzky. Presented is a PSA 9 MINT example that shows outstanding side to side centering with just a slight shift toward the top that keeps it from GEM MINT consideration. Gretzky appears in a well-registered image, a confident, skinny teenager, foreshadowing his rise to become the savior of the entire league. The card projects as an exceptionally high end example with outstanding color and four stalwart corners that meet the high demands of the grade. The usual heavy rough cut that is typical of the issue is more subdued than normal, and the slightly toned reverse is problem-free. A stunning card that should be included in any serious collection.
