The 1955 season represented the final battle between Topps and Bowman for supremacy in the baseball card market. While Bowman had a four-year head start in the industry and pulled a major coup by signing Mickey Mantle to an exclusive contract in 1954, taking him out of reach for Topps to issue his card, the bold, innovative designs produced by Topps year over the years won the day, starting a pasteboard dynasty that still exists to this day. And it's no surprise that the marvelous 1955 Topps collection was the death knell for Bowman as it featured a bumper crop of key rookie cards with Koufax, Clemente, and Killebrew among those making their inaugural pasteboard appearances. For the first time, Topps cards were issued in a horizontal format with both the player portrait and the action shot on the front in full color. The featured complete set is about as impressive and consistent as they come with card #64 graded PSA 8.5 and every other card in the series graded PSA 8. Yup, Koufax, Clemente, Killebrew, Mays, Aaron, J. Robinson, and every other card in the series a stunning PSA 8. An amazing achievement for the set-builder and a tremendous acquisition for the winning bidder!
