Absolutely one of the more attractive and alluring cards ever produced by Topps. Presented next is a sturdy NM/MT 8 specimen of Satchell Paige's significant 1953 Topps issue, as assessed by the vintage cardboard specialists at PSA. Stalwart NM/MT to NM/MT+ corners join NM/MT edges around a precisely registered image of perhaps the greatest baseball pitcher to ever walk the earth that marginally favors the north. Pure white borders can be observed around the extreme periphery, while the interior reveals absolutely no traces of grade-appropriate print in the upper and lower left fields. The reverse appears near perfectly centered with noticeably bold print and surprisingly little chipping along the susceptible full-bleed top borders. A sufficiently presentable upper grade example of the only Topps regular appearance by the great Negro, Cuban, Puerto Rican, Dominican, and Mexican League legend, who commanded such self-titled twirls as the "Midnight Rider," the "Four Day Creeper," the "Two Hump Blooper," the "Bat Dodger," the "Nothin' Ball," "Long Tom," and "Little Tom," among several others. At the time of issue of this historically significant cardboard keepsake, Paige was already 46 years old and well past his prime, a sad reality perhaps intentionally reflected in the melancholy countenance depicted in the image chosen for the issue.
