In the category of basketball, there are a handful of defining cards that are quintessential to any advanced collection. That includes the rookie cards of George Mikan (1948 Bowman), Bill Russell (1957 Fleer), Wilt Chamberlain (1961 Topps), and the featured specimen, the 1969 Topps Lew Alcindor debut pasteboard. The game's all-time leading scorer, the soon to be Kareem Abdul-Jabbar might very well be the sole reason that Topps went back to the "tall-boy" format that they used for the 1964 hockey and 1965 football sets, introducing a bright white backdrop that can be a haven for stray print. But in this case ... not. The featured PSA 8 example has a bright white backdrop to accentuate the blue color supporting the gangly Alcindor with sturdy NM/MT to NM/MT+ endpoints and a light pink reverse with a blue bio and stats that show off Lew's impressive career at UCLA. A tremendous card.
