A solid starter for the Detroit Tigers who posted an impressive 89-58 record after returning from four years of military service in the U. S. Navy, Fred Hutchinson retired from playing in 1953 and then managed for 11 seasons. Hutchinson was stricken with fatal lung cancer in 1964 at the age of 45 and his brother, Dr. William Hutchinson, honored him by creating the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, one of the best-known facilities of its kind in the world. The featured card hails from Hutchinson's last season as a player, signed by the hurler in faint but legible blue ink. A very tough piece for any autographed card collector.
