Thought to be a failed TV show that produced just 79 original episodes over three seasons, time has proven out that the Star Trek saga was merely ahead of its time. A product of the famed 1960s "space race" that inspired many science-fiction type shows, the franchise experienced a resurgence in the 1970s driven by a loyal fan base into one of the greatest empires in entertainment history. Topps decided to cash in on the cult following with an 88-card set in 1976, and while the collection isn't as extremely scarce as the glossy black and white cards that Leaf produced in 1967, it's still highly coveted by non-sports collectors. Hunting down unopened 36-count ten-cent boxes like the one featured here has become very difficult, and this example has been authenticated and sealed with the BBCE label. As the concept continues forward with new shows and movies, items like this can only become even more popular.
