Of the many thousands of professional baseball players that have donned a major-league uniform from the time the game was first invented, none have matched the list of accomplishments achieved by legendary Hall of Famer Tyrus R. Cobb. Not only had "The Georgia Peach" captured 12 American League batting titles while still holding the all-time record with a .366 batting average but he was also the AL leader in run scored five times, hits eight times, doubles three times, triples four times, RBI four times and stolen bases six times over his 24-year career. So it comes as no surprise that when the E98 "Anonymous set of 30" was released in 1910, Ty Cobb was the premier name in the series, though more than half of the subjects would inevitably land in the Baseball Hall of Fame. The featured card, not labeled as such but likely part of the famed "Black Swamp" collection due to its superior pack-fresh quality that is the hallmark of the publicized find, is centered close to perfectly within its bone-white frame with GEM MINT top corners that almost carry it to SGC's top assessment. The central image of Cobb, reaching up to snare a line drive, is virtually perfect with a deep, consistent fire-engine red backdrop supporting the slate-gray pigment of Cobb's Detroit Tigers uniform. The reverse is also produced to near perfection, a sharp brown print checklist on its clean white canvas with no sign of the bleeding that is so common for the series. An incredible specimen of one of baseball's greatest icons that appears to have emerged from a century-old time capsule in absolutely pristine condition.
