The 1908 World Series was only the fifth such baseball championship since the inaugural matchup in 1903, a rematch between the Chicago Cubs and the Detroit Tigers. The Cubs were defending champions, having taken the Tigers in five games and returning a lineup that featured the double play trio of Tinker, Evers and (player/manager) Chance while the Tigers countered with a lineup featuring Sam Crawford and Ty Cobb. The Cubs reigned supreme again in five games, blanking Detroit in the final two contests. Featured is an incredible and nearly impossible piece of baseball history; a full ticket to Game 4 of the 1908 World Series. It wasn't a happy day for the home team as the Cubs took the contest 3-0 with Hall of Famer Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown tossing a 4-hit shoutout. The second game in Detroit after dropping the series opener and then splitting games 2 and 3 in Chicago, the relatively generic piece simply proclaims "Detroit Base Ball Co., 1908 season, RAIN CHECK Game 2" with "Reserved Seat World's Series Game 2" to the side, reminding us that the game wasn't the tremendous spectacle it is today. The reverse has an ad for E. M. Harris & Co. tobacco shop and although there is a light horizontal wrinkle running across the center that is barely visible, the visual appeal is phenomenal. With an estimated attendance of just over 14,000, the number of tickets wasn't very large to begin with, making surviving specimens like this few and far between. An absolutely incredible piece of baseball history!
