After being acquired by the New York Giants in 1900 from Norfolk of the Virginia-North Carolina league, Christy Mathewson played in 6 games, racking up a dismal 0-3 record which prompted the Giants to return him to Norfolk and demand their money back. He was then signed by the Cincinnati Reds, who quickly traded him back to the Giants for Amos Rusie. By 1901 he had gained his Hall of Fame form, winning 20 games with a 2.41 ERA and 221 strikeouts. Offered here is his earliest known appearance on a baseball keepsake, an extremely scarce M128 National Police Gazette supplement. The piece measures 10 1/2" x 14 1/2" with some period tape residue and a small tear in the right edge, but the overall visual appeal is fantastic. A very desirable rookie year collectible of an inaugural Hall of Fame class member.
