Looking for a truly scarce and historically significant relic from the headwaters of baseball card production? Well here are three of them, all offered together and ripe for the taking: three original patents filed by the Goudey Gum Co. of Boston, Massachusetts with the United States Patent Office for the purpose of obtaining a trademark for “Oh Boy” gum. The first is dated December 2, 1918, the second is dated December 9, 1920, both of which name Enos Gordon Goudey as president, and the third is dated February 21, 1931. Two patent renewal applications for the 1918 and 1920 patents are included as well. Of course, the first baseball cards didn’t roll out of the Goudey factory until 1933, but without chewing gum, there couldn’t very well be gum cards! These patents laid the groundwork for the company to begin production of chewing gum, and eventually, the first baseball cards issued with gum as opposed to candy or tobacco. Take your chances with an important slice of collectibles history, as documents such as these seldom surface within our hobby.
