When a physical trainer in the mid-1920's saw a small family restaurant inside the Black Sea Hotel in Garfield, NJ, he though to himself, "This is the perfect place for The Babe." He meant Babe Ruth of course, toast of New York and pretty much all of America. For more than half a century, Jimmy Donohue's restaurants were well-known eating establishments for local VIPs. New York was just over the East River, and Jimmy's places (he would soon open up a second place) provided secluded rendezvous for many a celebrity. As a result, Donohue became fast friends with many of his famous patrons, with the most established bond belonging with Babe Ruth. Many times the Babe would write Jimmy with stories of his travels, usually including a comment concerning Jimmy's restaurants about the great food and atmosphere, and telling Jimmy he can't wait to get back. This offered item is no exception, and was originally part of the massive Jimmy Donohue family collection of items which hit the hobby a year ago. This one-page, boldly signed, typewritten letter on "Samuel Goldwyn Inc., Ltd." stationery was sent by Ruth to Donohue during filming of The Pride of the Yankees. Ruth plays himself in the movie, which is based on the life of Lou Gehrig. Ruth signed the letter "Babe Ruth" in black fountain pen. This lot is accompanied by a Letter of Authenticity by PSA/DNA grading the Ruth signature an "8".
