Second only to Mickey Mantle in terms of submission volume from the 1953 Topps set, the Satchell Paige inclusion is obviously one of the most popular and sought-after cards from the issue. Perhaps this is because Leroy was already 46 years old at the time of production, a rather biting reality that is seemingly depicted in the rueful expression on the immortal pitcher’s face. This example bears the grade of NM 7 as assessed by PSA, due in large part to a light touch to the lower right corner in the susceptible full-bleed nameplate. Overall visual appeal is tremendous, however, with near-perfect centering and a delightful application of original gloss bringing life to the boldly colored image.
