A simply great photo of the first pitch of the 1937 All-Star game in Washington, DC. New York Yankee Lefty Gomez has just released the ball, which is on its way to lead off hitter Paul Waner of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Waner would ground out to third, and the American League would beat the Senior Circuit 8-3, as the Yankees dominated. Gomez went three innings, allowing one hit for the victory. Led off hitter Red Rolfe has two hits, a walk, scored two runs, while driving in two. Lou Gehrig had two hits, a double and two-run homer, and drove in four runs. Gomez' battery mate Bill Dickey also had two hits, scored a run and drove in another. Gomez was such a dominant pitcher during that era, that he started five of the first six All-Star games! The photo has several ink notation on the obverse indicating who the individuals are, the occasion, the score and date. The verso has remnants of the original paper caption, and the "Associated Press Photo" stamp. Letter of Authenticity from PSA/DNA as a Type 1, 1st Generation photo.
