In 1954, the Dan-Dee Potato Chip company produced a set of 29 baseball cards, issued one per bag of greasy potato chips. The potato chip bags wreaked havoc on the edges, corners and surfaces of these great cards, often leaving bent corners and oil stains. These cards are one of the many regional food issues distributed during the 1950's and are one of the more popular. Although most cards are of local Cleveland Indians and Pittsburgh Pirates players, the balance contains Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees. The set includes nine Hall of Famers. The Dan-Dee company knew their local second division clubs were not going to sell many bags of chips, and they smartly included the perennial first division New York teams. It is difficult enough to find any Dan-Dee cards, but even more difficult to find them in high grade. A check of the PSA population report indicate of the almost 1800 cards graded, only a third grade at PSA NM 7 or better. This Gil Hodges card is a very eye appealing example, four square corners and no stains! The borders are white, and not the usual creamy colored border found on most Dan-Dees. An exceptional PSA NM 7 example of this tough to find regional food issue. With the white borders and lack of oil stains, this example is significantly more aesthetically appealing than other cards in similar grade.
