Graded by PSA NM-MT 8. Hank Greenberg was the first Jewish superstar in American sports, and one of the premier power hitters of his generation. The year before this card was produced, Hammerin' Hank hit 58 home runs, the most since Jimmie Foxx belted 58 in 1932, and only two home runs shy of Babe Ruth's magical 60 round trippers. Although considered on par with both those hitters, Greenberg falls short in the accumulation stats that Ruth and Foxx attained. One reason is Greenberg was hurt and missed almost the entire 1936 season, and Hank was also the first major star drafted into the service for World War II. He missed four more full seasons due to the war. This 1939 Playball card demonstrates amazing clarity to the photo, and the dark background contrasts nicely with the clean, off white borders. The four corners are square and pointed, with the only visual issue being approximately 60/40 centering. A classic card from an overlooked set, featuring one of the premier sluggers in baseball history.
