The first card in any set is always a bit more difficult to obtain in high grade, as we all know, due to rubber bands, shoe boxes, and whatever other forms of constraint young collectors employed for their cards. This Vern Bickford card, the #1 card in the ’49 Bowman set, survived these rigors and recently emerged from the PSA grading room with a NM/MT 8 designation. The bold red background grabs the viewer’s attention right off the bat, centering is more than grade-appropriate and only the lower left edge shows below-grade levels of wear. This is a splendid NM/MT 8 specimen with only 4 higher-graded examples on record.
