Arguably the most coveted of the E-cards from 1908 and 1909, Christy Mathewson's horizontal E102 issue has long been recognized in the hobby as a masterpiece, and along with his familiar T205 Gold Border card, comprise two of the greatest early 20th Century issues ever produced! Offered is an eye-appealing SGC 30 GOOD 2 E102 example that presents several above-grade qualities to counterbalance the self-evident centering bias in favor of the left edge, when viewed horizontally. "Big Six" appears to be in an expansive green field, lightly tossing the pill against the amber twilight of the declining sun, reminiscent of Robert Redford's Roy Hobbs in "The Natural." The colors are vibrant, to say the least, especially in the contrasting shades of his face and uniform. Not too surprisingly, given the scarce nature of this mysteriously anonymous issue, very few specimens have ever seen inside the halls of any grading company. A unique issue!
