Featured in this lot is a group of 4 remarkably well-preserved examples from the rare 1928 Tabacalera la Morena set, believed to be an issue originating from the tiny Republic of El Salvador. According to the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards, in terms of scarcity, "the extent of this card issue is not yet known." Indeed, the catalog checklists just 14 known examples of a potential total of 120 cards comprising the set. In fact, PSA has graded just 18 total examples. Offered in this lot are 4 of those 18 examples on record at PSA, all the highest ever graded of their issue, with newly discovered #107 Mathewson/McGraw and #154 Tunney/Heeney (Boxing) being the first ever to be evaluated by PSA. Amazingly advanced for their age, these specimens resemble Old Judge issues from the 19th Century, but with better photography, indicative of decades of technological advancements, and a crude yet pleasing colorization. Included in this group are the following: #99 Washington Senators PSA 5 EX, #107 Mathewson/McGraw PSA 5.5 EX+, #116 Ruth/Gehrig PSA 6 NM/MT, and #154 Tunney/Heeney PSA 3 VG. Given the unbelievable scarcity and lack of guidance when it comes to value, especially since two issues are newly discovered and one is a the only issue of Ruth and Gehrig appearing together during their playing days, there is no telling how valuable this tremendous lot is!
