The popularity of original Type I News Service Photos have increased significantly over the last decade. Some industry auction houses have had complete auctions of original wire photos. And with popularity increasing, scavengers begin to infiltrate the terrain. Enter PSA who hired experts in the original photo industry, and began authenticating original photos. As with sports cards, those photos capturing the best players in history are more desirable, and command higher values. A Type I photo is developed from the original negative, during the period in which the photo was taken. This photo depicts New York Yankee legend Joe DiMaggio being greeted at home plate by another legend, Lou Gehrig. In the 9th inning of Game 2 of the 1938 World Series, the Yankees were leading 4-3, in a tight pitching duel between Hall of Famers Lefty Gomez and the Dizzy Dean of the host Chicago Cubs. After a Tommy Henrich lead off single, DiMaggio belted a long home run off Dean, sending Ol' Diz to the showers and the Yankees to a second straight victory over the Cubs, eventually leading to a series sweep. This photo displays tremendously, a smiling DiMaggio about to cross home plate, arm outstretch for a waiting Gehrig. A few slight edge wrinkles and corner crazing are exhibited, none of which detract from the overall appeal of this photograph.
