The overwhelming popularity of the 1954 Topps hockey set stems from three primary features; detailed artwork, a brilliantly bleached background, and the patriotic red, white, and blue color. All three characteristics are exemplified on this Hal Laycoe specimen, as a marvelous image of the Bruin defensemen is surrounded by a retina-teasing alabaster background with bold red and blue coloring that exhibits less wear than is usual given the grade. With minimal stray print and four NM/MT+ corners, this specimen seems short-changed in a PSA 8 holder. Only 3 have ever graded higher.
