With legendary passer and future Hall of Famer Y.A. Tittle reaching his early 30s, the San Francisco 49ers decided it was time to start grooming a successor, allowing him the benefit of Tittle’s wisdom and mentoring, and growing into the leadership role over time. So with the #3 overall pick of the 1957 NFL draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected Stanford University quarterback John Brodie. Brodie saw limited action as a rookie in 1957, as the 49ers compiled an 8-4 record, with the sure-armed Tittle leading the NFL by completing over 63% of his passes. Brodie saw more playing time in 1958 through 1960, eventually sharing time with Tittle at the QB spot. By 1961, Brodie was ready to take over as the starter, and Tittle was traded to the New York Giants. Brodie was among the leading passers in the league throughout the 1960s, his best year being 1965 when he led the league with 3,112 passing yards and 30 touchdowns. He appeared in the Pro Bowl in 1965 and 1970. Also, in 1970, he received the NFL MVP award. When Brodie retired from the NFL, he ranked third in career passing yards, behind only Johnny Unitas and Fran Tarkenton.
Presented is a game-used San Francisco 49ers jersey, worn and autographed by superstar passer John Brodie. The jersey dates to the early 1970s, perhaps even from the 1970 MVP season. The jersey body is made of heavyweight cotton with interspersed nylon, not indicative of jerseys used during the 60s but predating the mesh jerseys introduced in the early to mid 70s. All numerals and “BRODIE” nameplate, introduced on 49ers jerseys in 1970, are tackle twill stitched and are of the correct font style, size, placement, and affixing. The Wilson size 42 label (1967-73 version) is straight stitched onto the left front tail, with Brodie's black sharpie signature adorning the "2" on the back of the jersey.
