The artwork of the 1953 Topps set is lauded through the hobby, especially the artist's rendering of legendary Hall of Famer Willie Mays. A card so eye-appealing that it was previously featured on an MHCC catalog cover, the artwork displayed here is supported by a strong ball point pen signature of "The Say Hey Kid." An interesting note about Mays is that as his career advanced to elite level, his signature became smoother and more melodic, no doubt from repetition due to the increased demand. The featured example appears to be a more haphazard penning deeply imprinted in the surface of the card, aligning more with his signature from his earlier years in the "big show", the autograph receiving a grade of 8 by the autograph authenticators as PSA/DNA. The card itself shows a common centering shift but is pleasingly squared around the perimeter with a bright central image that compares well with mid to slightly upper-grade examples. This is a spectacular collectible for any vintage autograph collector.
