While the featured Honus Wagner card isn't going to bring in the same revenue as his legendary T206 issue, it is much more scarce. That's because the T206 Wagner is thought to have a population of about 60 and the recent discovery of this M101-5 Holmes to Homes card increases the number of known specimens to ... one! Newly discovered along with the Babe Ruth rookie card and four other Hall of Famers featured in this auction, this Wagner card is part of a 200-card collection created by Felix Mendelssohn, who sold them in sets to various companies with the contracted firm's advertising on the reverse. To date, M101-5 cards have been found with no less than 18 different ad backs, but Holmes to Homes is one of if not the most scarce of them all. Only 80 examples are on record at PSA and SGC combined, and few Hall of Famers have surfaced up until now. And other than the Babe Ruth rookie card, it would be hard to argue that this first and only example of "The Flying Dutchman" is the next largest baseball icon to be discovered. Extensive back damage limits the grade to SGC 1 but most of the rare Holmes to Homes ad back is still visible. The card is significantly better from the front, showing Wagner in a well-registered batting pose with outstanding centering and rounded corners more in line with a VG to VG/EX grade. A fantastic find and the only one known to exist!
