When the question of the rarest Topps sets of all time arises many hobbyists go to the answer of either the 1961 (63) Topps Dice game release or the 1966 Topps Punch Out issue may come to mind before the offered 1980 Topps Pepsi-Cola set. Having handled as many elusive Topps releases as about anyone in the hobby, I firmly believe that cards from this set are just as rare as any Topps release known. When discussing rare prototype and proof cards that elude even the most advanced collectors, the 1980 Pepsi-Cola All-Stars are almost always near the top of the list. As the story has been told through the years, in 1980 Topps and Mike Schechter Associates (MSA) produced three prototype sheets for consideration by Pepsi executives regarding a possible promotion. The sheets were fully printed, front and back, which is highly unusual for proof cards and typically only happens when the parties are serious about making a deal. When the deal fell through, only two sheets were returned to Topps. The other sheet somehow found its way into the hobby and was cut into singles and sold off starting in the mid-1980's. Offered here is a copy of Hall Of Famer George Brett's card from this impossible set which has been graded 9.5 MINT+ by SGC with a sheet cut designation. In my humble estimation there are likely 3 to 4 examples of this card in full production form. The white whale to any George Brett collectors' collection!
