Quickly become the 1952 Topps Mantle card of its sport, the 1979-80 Wayne Gretzky rookie card is one the most essential pieces to any advanced hockey card collection. And why not; if there was ever an athlete in the sport of hockey that could compare to Babe Ruth and Wilt Chamberlain in baseball and basketball respectively from the standpoint of sheer dominance, it would certainly be Wayne Gretzky who has registered eight of the top 10 points scored seasons in NHL history (Mario Lemieux has the other two). Projecting a slightly darker shade of blue than the O-Pee-Chee variation, which amplifies any imperfections that may exist along the sides and endpoints while making high-grade examples more difficult, the featured Topps rookie card comes extremely close to flawless. To the naked eye, the whole perimeter looks perfect from tip to tip. The image of "The Great One," staring to the northeast as if even he's impressed with the corners, is delivered with bold color and precise registration, matched in quality by powder blue coloring on the reverse. Almost 6,500 have been graded by PSA with just 2 earning a GEM MINT label.
