While sports cards issued after 1973, the so-called "modern-day cards," often take a beating by collectors that perceive only vintage issues to be "reliable," the 1979-80 Wayne Gretzky rookie card is one glaring exception that is coveted by enthusiasts universally. Of the two issues, the O-Pee-Chee carries more prestige than the Topps in high grade due to its well-documented centering issues. This 1979-80 Wayne Gretzky rookie card is graded MINT 96 by SGC and exhibits a perfectly framed border that is a rare aberration from the typical OPC Gretzky rookie card. The edges of the bright blue border, which house a crystal clear image of the 18 year-old phenom, are virtually perfect to the naked eye and the insignificant chipping is barely even perceptible under magnification. Capping off this savory specimen is a generous layer of shimmering gloss and an effusive reverse that gives this 30-year-old issue the appearance of a card fresh out of the pack. If you don’t have a Gretzky RC in your arsenal and are looking to add one, this is a fine acquisition.
