The New York Yankees repeated as World Series Champions in 1978, finishing off the Los Angeles Dodgers in six games after leading the Major Leagues with a 100-63 regular season record, the 163rd game necessitated when the Yankees and Red Sox tied for the division title and played an extra contest to decide which team would move on to the postseason. Batting in the leadoff spot for the pinstipers was fan favorite Mickey Rivers, the fleet-footed centerfielder who was simply referred to in the Big Apple as "Mick the Quick." Rivers had a unique style as he got situated in the batter's box, moving his feet in a "pitter-patter" motion that was emulated by New York baseball fans throughout the Bronx, as Rivers became a symbol of the Yankees franchise during their championship reign. Presented is the game-used jersey and pants worn by Rivers during that 1978 march toward the title. The jersey has a Rawlings XL label and "ADULT" tag inside the collar, with a cursive "Mickey Rivers" embroidered onto the front left tail. The Yankee logo on the front and "17" on the back are attached with blue tackle-twill stitching. The pants and belt are heavily soiled, no doubt the result of Mickey's many stolen bases and dives back to first to avoid being picked off. Inside the waistband is a team stitched "17 RIVERS 35 28 1" denoting player number, name, size, inseam, and set number. Both pieces show considerable game wear. LOA from Mile High Card Company.
