Nearly a half-century has come and gone since 1970 Topps wax packs hit the store shelves, but the featured unopened wax box has been safely tucked away for all that time. With the introduction of the PSA Set Registry some years ago, speculators have acquired unopened wax boxes like the one featured here exclusively to find cards to send to PSA in the hopes of landing low pop GEM MINT examples that could be sold at a high premium to set-builders who have learned, through experience, that the 1970 Topps set yields far fewer PSA 10 grades than expected. At just over 1% of all submitted 1970 Topps baseball cards actually reaching the top of the grading scale, the collection has turned out to be much harder to assemble in top-notch condition than many of the 1960s Topps sets thought to be particularly “difficult.” As a result, the population of complete wax boxes has dwindled over recent years. The collection's 4th series (#373-459) includes #380 T. Perez, 394 Hodges, 449 Palmer, and the all-star cards of McCovey, Carew, B. Robinson, Rose and R. Jackson among other difficult low pops in top-grade. While it is impossible to know exactly what awaits inside, those that would accept the risk of opening the packs inside face a very real possibility of MINT and GEM MINT cards that make it very tempting to go exploring, but the safe play is to keep the box intact and let it age like fine wine. Authenticated and sealed by Baseball Card Exchange (BBCE).
