One of the toughest cards in the Roberto Clemente library to get a hold of is the "experimental" 1968 Topps 3-D issue. Two years prior to the introduction of the Kellogg’s 3-D series, Topps gave it a go by experimenting with a similar 3-D test issue that included 12 subjects. A thick “ribbed” plastic coating was laminated over a sharp player image and fuzzy stadium background, and the combination provided the illusion of depth perception as the card was moved or tilted. Due to extremely limited distribution, these cards are ultra scarce and demand a significant premium in today’s market. Though graded PSA 7, this card displays no glaring weaknesses to the naked eye to clearly differentiate it from higher graded examples, thanks in part to the rounded corners. While many cards from this series have blank backs, this one has the more desirable XOGRAPH disclaimer printed on the reverse. A wonderful card with eye appeal that transcends the technical grade.
