Many collectors remain ambivalent toward the conservative look of the 1964 Topps collection but that certainly can't be blamed on the set's flagship issue, of course being Mickey Mantle. Even though Mantle saw limited action the previous season, appearing in just 65 games with 172 at-bats, he still managed to wrap out 15 home runs and a .314 batting average, putting him on pace for a typical MVP contending season. The right-handed pose of The Mick set against the stadium seats is every bit as enticing as many of Mantle's previous card issues and it turns out to be a much tougher get at the grade of PSA 9 than people realize. Solid centering leans just a touch to the right side and the edges press the limits for GEM MINT classification when viewed from the front, while the reverse does display some negligible chipping expected on the vulnerable orange edges. A cornerstone toward assembling one of the best '64 sets on the PSA Set Registry.
