The 1958 Topps Baseball effort remains one of the most colorful and appealing sets of the entire hobby. A sharp departure from its 1957 predecessor, the 1958 issue left the on-field action behind and introduced close-up portraits and poses, supported by enchanting single-colored backgrounds. Leading off with a memorable and highly coveted #1 Ted Williams specimen and including key issues of Mantle, Mays, Koufax, Aaron, Clemente, and Snider, the set also famously features inaugural cardboard appearances by Roger Maris and Orlando Cepeda, and also boasts a tremendously popular selection of multi-player cards such as "World Series Batting Foes" (Mantle/Aaron), "Rival Fence Busters" (Mays/Snider), and "Brave Fence Busters" (Aaron/Mathews). Presented here is a stunning complete set, numbering 494 in all, in spectacular and captivating overall high-grade condition, including (263) examples that have been graded by PSA. Of those, we have 3 cards graded MINT 9 (190 Schoendienst, 314 (Snider/Alston), and 424 Doby), 11 cards graded NM/MT+ 8.5 (39, 63, 137, 161 Larsen, 181, 192, 205, 350, 452, 461, 479 Fox AS), and 3 cards in NM 7 holders (78, 440 Mathews, and 487 Mantle AS); the remaining 246 cards are in NM/MT 8 holders. But they're not garden-variety NM/MT 8 specimens, as our astute consignor has compiled this assemblage with an eye for exceptional colors, centering and overall visual appeal, resulting in a multitude of high-end pasteboards, the vast majority of which have never been reviewed since the implementation of PSA's half-point grading system a number of years ago. The ungraded portion of this admirable set is in equally impressive ready-to-be slabbed condition, grading approximately 10% MINT, 60% NM/MT, 25% NM and just 5% lesser, due largely to centering issues. Ungraded keys include 115 Bunning NM/MT, 162 Hodges NM/MT, 187 Koufax NM/MT, 238 Mazeroski NM, 351 Fence Busters NM/MT, 375 Reese NM, 400 Fox NM/MT, 418 WS Batting Foes (Mantle/Aaron) NM/MT, 484 F Robinson AS NM, 485 Williams AS NM, and a Bazooka contest card (NM). All other stars not listed above are in NM/MT 8 holders, including Mantle, Mays, Aaron, Williams, Clemente, Berra, Drysdale and Koufax, so if you are looking to become the new owner of a magnificent complete set painstakingly assembled over the course of many, many years by our sharp-eyed consignor, then this lot is deserving of your undivided attention!
