There are few football cards that carry the prestige of a top-graded 1957 Topps Johnny Unitas rookie card. Widely considered one of the top quarterbacks in NFL history, Unitas was a 9th round draft pick who was cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers before ever taking a snap. Considered by the team to be "not smart enough" to succeed as an NFL quarterback, Unitas is now remembered as a prototype marquee quarterback of the modern era, possessing strong passing skills, exceptional field generalship, and a dominating media presence. I guess the Steelers missed out, but you don't have to miss out on this elite PSA 8.5 specimen. One of the "big three" rookies in the '57 Topps series, along with Bart Starr and Paul Hornung, this example is well-centered with bright green and orange colors and four corners that appropriately border MINT status. As is often the case with top-notch specimens of "Johnny U", the top and bottom horizontal edges experience a light, factory-fresh rough cut. With just 8 examples graded higher, this card would be a welcome addition for any collector looking to make a move northward on the PSA Set Registry.
