Distributed in the metropolitan area with a purchase of a copy of the now defunct newspaper, Journal American cards included members of the New York Yankees, Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants. The Yankees were ... well, the Yankees, and the Dodgers and Giants were usually the two teams left standing to battle for the National League pennant in order to get the chance to lose to the Yankees in the World Series. The key to the set is, of course, Mickey Mantle. But unlike other Mantle cards, even his legendary 1952 Topps card, the 1954 Journal-American card of Mantle had yet to register an example higher than NM/MT, until now! This phenomenal card has recently left PSA headquarters, breaking the barrier that has existed for over 60 years to register as the first and only PSA 9 MINT specimen. The card is simply spectacular, with flawless top corners and MINT bottom edges to go with strong black and red print on the clean front and back surfaces. The photos of the players in this set are usually very crude and lack sharpness, much like a newspaper photo in the 1950s, but this picture of Mantle is crisp and clear. There are few PSA Set Registry battles more hotly contested than the race to build the best Mickey Mantle collection, so imagine what snagging one of the last surviving "one of one" cards can do to raise your rating!
