The 1953 Topps Baseball set, which if complete, boasted a checklist of (274) cards, was much smaller than that of the previous year, which was a direct result of the intense competition Topps faced from Bowman in a very limited market of customers. The set was done with prints from small color paintings taken from black and white photos. Most of the photography featured in the set was geared towards portrait style imagery as opposed to action poses. The portraits were beautifully handcrafted, making it quite popular with card enthusiasts of the day. At the bottom of each card is the player name, position, and team for which he represented. The condition sensitive color panels at the bottom of each card were either red or black depending on which league the subject resided, with red meaning the American League and Black meaning players from the other (National) League. The offered starter lot consists of (170) cards with the following missing numbers: 10, 11, 16, 25-28, 31, 32, 34-37, 39-45, 47-56, 58, 59, 63-66, 68, 70, 71, 74-78, 80, 82, 84, 85, 88-91, 93, 94, 96-98, 101, 102, 109-111, 115, 123-127, 130, 134, 136, 139-141, 143, 152, 154, 165, 169, 221, 222, 226, 232, 233, 236-238, 244, 245, 250, 251, 254-256, 258, 260, 262, 263, 265, 266, 269, and 272-274. A total of (10) cards are PSA graded at the following: PSA 6 EX-MT - #264 Woodling. PSA 4 VG-EX - #'s 62 Irvin, 207 Ford, 220, Paige, and 228 Newhouser. PSA 3.5 VG+ - #'s 1 Robinson, 61 Wynn, and 104 Berra. PSA 2.5 Good+ - #280 Bolling. PSA 1 PR - #82 Mantle. A very attractive lower to middle grade starter set with 10% EX-MT or better, 50% VG-EX/EX, 30% GD/VG, and 10% FR-PR. Get after it!
