In 1952, who at the fledgling Topps Company could have imagined that card #1 of its inaugural set would have such an immense impact on the hobby for over 60 years? With Bowman leading off their '51 and '52 editions with Whitey Ford and Yogi Berra respectively, it would've seemed appropriate for the "new kid in town" to counter with something equally flamboyant, perhaps Jackie Robinson or Mickey Mantle in the pole position. But that was not the case, and little known Andy Pafko was featured on a card that rates among the most coveted issues of the post-war era. A tremendously difficult card to find in high-grade, the 1952 Topps Pafko in NM/MT condition has become a status symbol that identifies its owner as one of the truly elite collectors in the hobby. The presented specimen boasts NM/MT qualities in every way, with several characteristics bordering on MINT! The centering is obviously sufficient for the grade, while the corners and edges range from NM/MT on the right, to NM/MT+ and perhaps even MINT on the left. The highlight, however, is unquestionably the brilliant MINT image, characterized by intensely bold colors that are completely devoid of any imperfections that wouldn't be tolerated on a significantly higher graded specimen. If you've been patiently waiting to upgrade your assemblage with just the right Pafko card, we feel pretty confident that it's being presented right in front of you!
