Beginning with their inaugural issue in 1948, Bowman had a tradition of allotting card #1 to a rookie, but unlike Bob Elliott, Vern Bickford, and Mel Parnell, who manned the pole position in previous Bowman sets, the debut card of the 1951 set became a legendary superstar and Hall of Famer. The offered Whitey Ford rookie bears the grade of GOOD 2 as determined by SGC but presents with bold colors, a clear image and near-perfect centering.
