As the first true superstar in professional basketball, the 1948 Bowman George Mikan card is akin to the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card. But while other baseball greats of his day performed similarly to Mantle, George Mikan towered above his competition, literally! Though his hulking 6' 10" and 245 lbs. is not uncommon in today's game, it was virtually unheard of 70 years ago, allowing him to post double-double averages in six of his seven seasons. This well-printed specimen is near-perfectly centered with edges and endpoints that certainly seem deserving of that extra half-grade, while the slate gray reverse boasts deep red and black printing with no sign of defects. At this grade level, harsh in our opinion, you won't find a sharper, cleaner specimen of arguably basketball's most important card!
