With a humble, statuesque appearance reminiscent of early Greek and Roman sculptures, the offered 1939 Goudey Premium Joe DiMaggio boasts one of the finest images of “The Yankee Clipper” ever applied to cardboard. Measuring an impressive 4” x 6-3/16” and printed in brown-toned sepia, the offered high-end collectible hails from the 48-card 1939 Goudey Premium set, also catalogued as R303-A. Like its Canadian V351 counterpart, backs feature “How to...” playing tips, with “Joltin’ Joe’s” issue appropriately illustrating “How to Catch Flies.” With an immaculate, breath-taking surface exhibiting not a single imperfection in its susceptible brown background, the offered example also features NM/MT corners and edges, a clean reverse, and accurate centering with a petty bias in favor of the right edge, and certainly seems deserving of a superior grade. But with no known superior or even equivalent examples at either SGC or PSA, does it really matter? Rarely encountered in any grade, offered is an unsurpassed Joe D. premium capable of dropping even the stiffest jaw.
