Here's a clean and exceptionally well-preserved example of what many collectors consider to be Lou Gehrig's most appealing pasteboard, the 1934 Goudey "Yellow" issue, card #37. Hindered from a higher grade by the breadth of perhaps two hairs, the featured specimen has been graded PSA 8 NM/MT but features noticeably NM/MT+ or better qualities in every scrutable category save for its self-evident centering. The corners appear predominantly NM/MT+, save for the bottom left, which is good enough for MINT. The NM/MT+ edges, likewise, are predominantly sharp and clean, with only the reverse left showing some hardly perceptible rough contours. In addition to its NM/MT+ perimeter and NM/MT centering, however, the highlight of this masterful Gehrig is no doubt its brilliant and borderline MINT surface. Lou's image has been near perfectly rendered, with bold contrasting hues and accurate registration. The brilliant canary yellow backdrop, moreover, is profoundly saturated and displays only a few pin pricks of print along the extreme left periphery, an anomaly for an issue that typically shows moderate to even severe traces of print in its susceptible surface. Not only is this a thoroughly NM/MT specimen of an immeasurably appealing card boasting several above-grade qualities, but it's also an extremely important card in the career of "Larrupin' Lou." Carrying the Goudey gum card sales torch formerly hoisted by teammate Babe Ruth, Gehrig, with his two separate cards in the '34 Goudey set, was well aware that his performance on the field had better match the expectations of not only his bubble-blowing fans but of the his teammates as well, particularly the man from whom he took the torch (and would eventually take the role of team captain the following year). So what does "The Iron Horse" do in 1934? He goes out and wins himself the AL Triple Crown, batting .363 with 49 four-sackers and a whopping 165 RBI, arguably one of the most productive offensive seasons ever. And he did it all with grace and humility, with a smile that could stop the rain, and with enough class to continually inspire fans and fellow players to this day.
