No one knows for sure why the Goudey company chose Benny Bengough as the leadoff hitter in their inaugural 1933 issue, but as the number one card in the set, his examples were often at the top of collector's stacks and subjected to rubber bands, paper clips and many other storage dilemmas. As such, high-grade examples are hard to find. The offered specimen cleared the majority of those hurdles, however, with only light, uniform corner wear, resulting in a grade of EX 5 as determined by SGC. The red backdrop remains deeply saturated, and a bit of wet sheet transfer can be seen on the reverse.
