Carl Mays has the tragic distinction of being the only modern era pitcher to cause a fatality while pitching. On August 16th, 1920, while pitching for the Yankees, he delivered a trademark rising submarine fastball to Cleveland's Ray Chapman, known for crowding the plate. The pitch cracked Chapman's skull; he was taken to a nearby hospital but never regained consciousness. Mays went on to a 207-win career, leading the league in 1921.
