Offered is without question one of the most esoteric and unusual baseball collectibles of the tobacco era depicting the legendary Hall of Famer Ty Cobb from one of the rarest and most desirable of all tobacco premium issues. L1 Leathers were made available as part of the same promotion as T3 Turkey Reds and S81 Silks. All three issues were available exclusively by mail in exchange for coupons packaged with Helmar "Turkish Trophies" brand tobacco. Ten coupons were needed to get a T3, twenty-five coupons for an S81 silk, and fifty coupons were required to obtain an L1 Leather. The L1 Leathers are by far the rarest of all these classic premium tobacco issues. Ty Cobb, of course, is of the key to the L1 set, and this is one of the rarest and most desirable of all Ty Cobb tobacco issues. This is a very respectable example, with one small pinhole at the top left, which is commonplace with L1s. The cowhide surface exhibits honest wear along with some light creasing and/or wrinkling, otherwise fully intact with a modest yet easily identifiable image of "The Georgia Peach." Seldom offered in any condition, this is an item wanted by many, yet obtained by few. VG to EX condition.
