Issued by the Pinkerton Tobacco Company (the parent company of Red Man Tobacco) these cabinets can be considered bona fide cabinets in the very truest sense as each one is a real photograph affixed to an original mount. The offered collectible is of exceptional rarity and is most likely among only a handful of known specimens. While Pinkerton Cabinets can be found of several dimensions as well as with different colored mounts, the offered card is of the norm measuring 4-3/4" x 7-3/4" and is presented on the most attractive olive/stone gray mount featuring an embossed back. While many of the subjects encountered within this highly elusive issue have the photographic image affixed to the mount with two dabs of glue or paste at the upper corners, the offered example is in fact adhered to the mount at all four of the corners with the middle of the photograph not adhered by any substance to the pasteboard. Sports Card Guarantee (SGC) for this reason, as well as the sheer fact of not having seen many Pinkerton cabinets, has chosen (and we concur) to grade the cabinet as Authentic, and does absolutely agree with our sentiments that the mount is absolutely original as issued. The condition of the cabinet is fantastic, featuring a spectacular and almost foreshadowing image of the tragic figure chasing down a fly ball fully adorned in the Cleveland American League garb of the period. The front of the mount rates a stunning EX/MT with a minor area of wear present at the lower right corner. On the reverse there is an area at the upper right corner that is missing the first layer of the paper as well as an area that did contain a label that has since been removed with no hindrance to the paper stock. The image affixed to the mount exhibits a extraordinarily stunning depth of detail as well as a perfectly focused and contrasted central image. The lower left corner of the image has chipped and is missing, but this does not detract from the overall appeal of this rare and imagination-conjuring collectible. An enchanting and attention-demanding card that is offered at the very height of rarity and desirability.
