While high-grade D304 examples with Brunners ad-backs have received unprecedented attention of late, the resurgence of interest in these scarce bakery-issued cards has somewhat overshadowed the fact that the Brunners variety has unquestionably emerged as the most common of the five possible D304 ad backs, which also include General Baking, Butter Krust, Martens, and Weber. Offered here is a phenomenally scarce example of Frank Chance's Weber Bakery ad back, which is the only example on record at PSA and just so happens to be in remarkably preserved EX/MT condition. Compared to the hundreds of D304 Brunners ad backs graded by PSA, the current population census reports just 3 other Weber Bakery examples on record from the entire 25-card set, none of which have graded over EX 5. To confirm this perceived scarcity, a consultation of SGC's population report shows just 16 total Weber ad backs on record from the entire set, the single finest of which has graded at the EX/NM 6 level, compared to a whopping 246 Brunners Bread examples, only 1 of which has survived in strong enough condition to surpass the EX/NM 6 level. Finally, to top things off and to clear up questions regarding PSA's flip, the offered specimen is not, in fact, the more common Chicago variation. As any collector can clearly see by the black block over the team name, it is of the far scarcer "No Team" or "Traded" variety, a subtle alteration found on five of the set's included players who were traded in the final years of production between 1913 and 1914. Any which way you butter it up, the offered Frank Chance is the very finest extant, the only example known to exist at PSA, with just a single inferior competitor in the EX 5 class at SGC. Remarkably rare and impossibly high-grade, we strongly encourage advanced collectors to intelligently hedge their collection investment with this one-of-a-kind Chance.
