Any pitcher that posts a 20+ win season in his first five major league campaigns would certainly be in contention to have their name placed among Cobb, Wagner and Mathewson as one of the all-time greats of the game. However, Pittsburgh hurler Deacon Phillipe would only reach that magical win mark one more time, and with 189 lifetime victories, enjoyed an excellent career that falls markedly short of Hall of Fame worthy. But today, Philippe joins the aforementioned immortals for a different purpose. Like Cobb, Wagner and Mathewson, the Deacon Philippe E93 Standard Caramel card offered in this auction is the one and only specimen is existence to grade PSA 9 with none graded higher, and only of only 13 in the entire E93 series to achieve such a grade. Centered very close to dead-perfect although just a whisker toward the right side, the nearly flawless MINT+ endpoints and brilliant white frame are matched by a masterpiece of a central image, seamlessly intermingling pigments of blue, red, purple, orange and green as your eyes go from north to south. The image of Deacon is as precise as the well-placed backdrop, more than worthy of the exclusive grade.
