A perfectly centered example of Joe Kelley's vibrant E97 issue, this one shows an impressive image on front but a touch too much corner wear for anything higher than VG 3 from SGC. A lifetime .317 hitter, Kelley was nicknamed "The Kingpin of the Orioles" on a stacked Baltimore line-up in the 1890s that included Wee Willie Keeler, Hughie Jennings, and John McGraw, with whom he no doubt shared and developed many leadership qualities. Kelley remains 9th on the all-time triples list with 194 and was elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1971. For a player-manager of his stature, he appears in surprisingly few sets, including both the E107 and T206 and related sets, which helps to explain why he remains one of the keys to the E97 Briggs set.
